Redfish are the perfect charter species. They pull hard, rip drag and fight for a long time. Fortunately, Tampa Bay is loaded with these bronze bombers. On recent trips,
we have got into schools of reds and the rod bending actions has been intense. Red drum are literally being caught all over Tampa Bay and on the Gulf coast. Redfish will eat almost any baits: cut mullet, cut lady fish, almost any cut bait, white bait, pin fish or shrimp. Most of our fish have been coming off white bait.
Mullet schools can be a good indicator of where redfish might be located. Don’t be afraid to think “out of the box” when it comes to these fish. I have caught them on cut Jack Crevalle before. The great thing about these fish is that the will stay schooled up until the cold fronts push the breeders offshore to spawn, but some fish will move into the rivers and canals. Then, docks can become very productive. I would encourage anglers to get out on the water and get on some reds.
